Earn a Master’s Degree in Bioengineering Online

The Bureau of Labor Statistics recently identified biomedical engineering as the fastest-growing job area in America. At the same time, few students are pursuing the advanced degrees that this field demands. That means that graduates of master’s programs in bioengineering are well-positioned for multiple job offers and attractive salaries.

Biomedical engineers solve health-related problems by combining knowledge of biology, medicine, and engineering. They develop instruments used in medical procedures as well as medical devices such as prostheses, pacemakers, and glucose monitoring machines. Some biomedical engineering master’s degree students concentrate in areas such as biomechanics, medical imaging, and orthopedic engineering.

Although bioengineering is a very hands-on field, several reputable schools are offering bioengineering master’s degree programs entirely online. Here are some top options.

1)   The School of Bioengineering at Colorado State University is moving its decade-old bioengineering program online. The 30-credit graduate program can be taken part-time or full-time.

2)   Johns Hopkins University has an online Master of Science in Bioinformatics program. It prepares students for bioinformatics careers within industry and government organizations. Concentrations are available in computational biology, genomics and gene sequencing, protein bioinformatics, and systems biology.

3)   Columbia University has a new online Masters of Science in Biomedical Engineering program. The 30-credit program must be completed within five years. Up to six credits can be transferred from other accredited schools.

Not sure about bioengineering? At least three top schools — MIT, the University of California at Berkeley, and Utah State University –offer free distance learning courses in this subject area.
